Plate CLEANED!! This was my first time at Jakes, I have been wanting to try them out for some time. I took my two sisters and we all loved our food. I was shocked by some of the negative reviews I was reading because my experience was so great!! If you had a bad experience please give them another try because they listened!!! Every piece of food I ate was delicious! I didn’t have to touch the salt and pepper shakers on my table! We all tried different things and I was able to taste the cornbread, fish, jerk wings, pork chop, sweet potatoes, Mac n cheese. Everything was delicious! The staff was also very welcoming and polite!! I will be coming back for sure!!!
Not very friendly staff, not the best first impression! I went in a little while after opening (1130) on a Thursday. I got the jerk chicken, cabbage, sweet potato pie, cornbread, and a side of catfish. The chicken was old and dry, very disappointing because I drove to this restaurant for Caribbean food. Like others who commented about the cornbread, it was very dry. Maybe others like it dry and falling apart, but not me. Sweet potato pie was ok, oddly sticky. I would give it another try. The cabbage was good, not well seasoned, but I would get it again. But my best part was my add-on of catfish, which is sad because I went to the restaurant for the jerk chicken; it was excellent.
I know my Jamaican food. We had Jerk Chicken & 2 stewed Oxtails with sweet potato casserole this Thursday. Neither were good at all just an odd taste. The Oxtails I've never tasted any that bad before ever. My friend Spent $150 none of it was good at all. I live almost 2 hours away so I was very disappointed
Great food. I had the jerk chicken with okra and sweet potato casserole. Everything tasted great. The sweet potato casserole was awesome. Made for a great dessert. I would recommend this restaurant and next time I'm in Birmingham I'll return.
I got Jake's delivered. It was decent. Food was not burnt but it wasn't flavorful. The catfish was good with not a lot of seasoning. The cabbage was very salty and mac n cheese had no salt. The mac n cheese was $6 and there was definitely not $6 worth of mac n cheese in my container. There also wasn't any flavor in the mac n cheese. The greens were the only thing with good flavor in my opinion. The corn bread was a little dry but otherwise good. Pork chop with gravy was tender and tasted good but was still basic. Next time I will try their Jamaican and Carribean fare. 2-6-23 update. I tried the jerk chicken, carribean rice and shrimp. They were frickin delicious! Full of flavor, tender large wings and huge shrimp cooked perfectly. The rice was not dry and very flavorful. The cabbage was still a little salty for me but the cornbread was not dry this time and it was delicious as well. Thanks Jakes!
