My mom and I were so hungry and this was an impromptu decision to stop at Surf's Up South Shore Restaurant. This was our first visit there. First off the service was awesome, as the owner was having to cover the areas of cook and cashier. The food was lovingly cooked to order. While we waited for our food the owner/cook/cashier blessed us with a full serving sample of the Fried Biscuits. OMG ... biting into these warm biscuits was darn near euphoric (I'm not kidding)! To me it was like the perfect balance between a biscuit and donut, with a sprinkling of powdered sugar. I even think I saw and tasted a hint of cinnamon. I definitely wanted more! Next up, we got to sample about a tablespoon full of delicious dirty rice. For my order I got the three wing special. They were perfectly seasoned with the perfect crunch. I was allowed to swap out the french fries for a serving of red potatoes instead. Mmm... these were soft and delicious. Since I love Fried Green Tomatoes I ordered the thin slice, as you have the option of thick or thin. The tomatoes were just right with the seasoning and corn meal. My mom ordered the fried Whiting fillets. I got to tase a piece and it too was delicious. I would eat there again.
Glad I decided to give this restaurant a try. Had the catfish fillet dinner with fresh cut fries. It was one of the best catfish dinners I had at any restaurant period. The fish was seasoned and cooked to perfection and the fries were hot, crispy, and fresh. Will definitely be back and also recommend this place to friends/family. It is sad that so many of the seafood restaurants in black neighborhoods are owned by non black people and the food isn't seasoned or cooked as good as this place yet you see our ppl still buying at those places. This restaurant is definitely deserves much more business.
This was my first (and last) visit to this location! Why the owner just didn’t close up for the evening is beyond me, and all I ended up with was a bag full of bad food! Ordered catfish filets & fries…received 2 very crispy, overcooked and greasy catfish fillets and one perch filet in the same condition! Received zero fries. The other order of grilled shrimp, garlic fries and coleslaw was disappointing as well. A number of menu items were all sold out and I ordered what I did just not to walk out empty handed. Maybe I went there too late on a Saturday evening or the fact that the owner was shorthanded that day, I don’t know, but I have never bought seafood as bad as this was.
The moment I walked in the restaurant it was extremely clean. The owner was very friendly he explained his menu and how everything is freshly made. He even gave me some beignets to try while my food was being freshly cooked. the Hennessy chicken was juicy and fried just right, the cheesy grit was cook perfect and I’ll definitely return. The area looked safe and well lit so no worries.
The wings were so damn hard, I know that they fried and reheated twice, or just seating in grease. I really wanted to like this place. Black owned and close to home. With those prices, which I don't mind to keep small business operating. But they have to be mindful as well. Not happy @ all
