Went here on a friend’s recommendation. Atmosphere was excellent, very mellow vibes. Staff were all extremely friendly and approachable from the time we entered until the time departing. Overall the food was good, but some were stellar while others missed the mark for me. Catfish was stellar! Absolutely wonderful — lightly breaded, fried perfectly, moist inside. Half chicken was stellar! This is no ordinary chicken! I’m at a loss for words to describe this gem. It is smoked to perfection! Juicy and tender. Meat practically falls off the bone. The sauce is incredible — light and citrusy! Must try! Pork chop was well composed and was a nice cut, but the overly salty rub and stuffing took away my enjoyment overall. Crab cakes were also overly salty and also very gummy texture, with too much binder and not enough crab. I didn’t even finish one crab cake. Beignets were stellar! Served warm and steamy, excellent texture! Reminiscent of my visit to Cafe du Monde in NOLA. Well done!
This is my third time going to Krewe and overall I've been pretty satisfied. The story behind the restaurant/business is quite inspiring and I recommend you check it out. Essentially, the owners moved from Minneapolis to St. Joseph and are using Krewe to "expand on their mission of racial justice." Good food and a good mission? I'm in! They also own another favorite in town, Flour & Flower. The atmosphere at Krewe is great. Sometimes on weekends they have a Jazz Brunch which, combined with the food, will transport you to New Orleans -- an unexpected and welcomed twist in rural Minnesota. As for the food, I wanted to love grandpa's gumbo, but it was just way too spicy for me. Take that with a grain of salt, my spice tolerance is not high. Most recently, I got the eggs hussarde and it was wonderful! Flavor was great and potatoes were perfectly seasoned. I went one other time, and was happy but not wow-d, hence the four star review. I'm willing to have my mind changed the next time I head up and try the bread pudding! Two last tid bits: -Parking is easy. You can find it on College Ave or W Minnesota St. -The service here is always amazing
Food got knocked down a little bit. My only gripe with the food was that it was EXTREMELY salty. So much so that it was the dominant flavor in the Grandpa's Gumbo that I had. The Bucatini and Garlic Scape Pesto that my girlfriend had, was excellent, the bread and butter was excellent. Service was top notch. We were seated very quickly, and the evening was perfect to sit outside and enjoy some of the nicer weather that Minnesota has to offer. Atmosphere was also excellent. My girlfriend and I were able to have a conversation at a normal volume without feeling like we had to yell at each other across the table to talk. Overall, I would definitely give this place a try again, plus it's a local business, and despite one minor bump with the experience, I would absolutely go back and try something new.
Really tremendous experience for my family at Krewe. We were so delighted at the spirit of this place and, most importantly, the excellent food. All dishes were fantastic and as delicious (and more!) as what we've had in New Orleans. The service was great - friendly and attentive. We look forward to returning :)
Had lunch in a Saturday (note that brunch is only on Sundays). Loved the grandpas gumbo! You can get some bread for the extra sauce and it’s perfect. My friend had the Mac and cheese and the chicken sandwich. Portions were generous, fries weee great! We sat outside and the service was excellent. Server had lots of recommendations for both their menu and destinations in town.
