We planned our Baltimore wedding on relatively short notice (a couple of months). The tasting box had a plethora of delicious options. What we liked the most about these cakes was that they were flavorful buy not cloying, very well-balanced. We ended up choosing a chocolate cardamom and ricotta cake combination with vanilla buttercream icing, no filling. It blew our guests away! Don't sleep on this wonderful bakery!
After another small bakery ghosted me, I reached out to Jamillah for a friend's birthday cake. My friend prefers simple flavors elegantly presented--and Jamilla came through! Three layers of luscious lemon sponge filled with tart, unctuous lemon curd, and enveloped in vanilla buttercream. The outside of the cake was beautifully decorated in a minimalist style with preserved lemons. The birthday girl, who I think humored me by agreeing to accept a cake when she's been disappointed so many times before, was blown away with how good the cake tasted. I can report that multiple 50-something women each ate two L-A-R-G-E pieces on that day. Jamillah was a joy to work with, and now I'm telling all my friends to order cakes from Taste This Cake. I'm out here trying to drum up extra birthdays so I can order another cake from Taste This Cake.
This is definitely a place for persons who have a serious sweet tooth and looking for a gustatory knockout. If that's what you're looking for, this place is it. This was my first time patronizing and don't think it'll be the last. But I won't overdo in supporting (and that's not meant in a bad way). While the cake that I ultimately got wasn't what wanted to get originally (I was aiming for something custom for the occasion [birthday)]), the strawberry crunch cake that Jamillah suggested was more than sufficient. I will say that it is a cake that, imho, says "Expect the unexpected" with its outer icing (when getting it) but at the same time, when you cut into it, it's a case of "not really" while still surprising you. You really do see that pink strawberry crunch color that you'd get from the Good Humor ice cream bar, when you probably were expecting a regular white cake, flavor aside. This cake has some serious gustatory staying power; a little really goes along way in terms of taste and impact (hence my not overdoing in supporting). The only 'downside', if I can really call it such, is the sweetness. It has an all-around sweetness that kicks, slaps and grabs. It was a bit much for some (really one diabetic who couldn't really take as wanted and one, who's a cake critic in her own right, who was trying to lay off the sugar at the moment and digs fresh strawberries for strawberry flavored anything. Can't win them all. 🤷♂️). But the man of the hour loved it, absolutely loved it. And it was a knockout for the stomach; it currently sitting half finished as nobody could get a second slice. It was that filling. It surprising did more than job for its size. It's a big thing in a small package. But a word of advice, as this was/is a learning experience for me in ordering from a non-retailer: if you have a sense of how you want the cake you want to have served, and you're not totally sure if the cake offering--while described fairly well on the webpage--align with what you're expecting to get (in terms of flavor, esthetic or both), do discuss with your baker what you're for aiming for, for greater clarity of vision. I will say this, Jamillah will definitely work with you for to the extent that she can. Check it out.
We booked them for our wedding. Absolutely hands down the best cake we've had! We'd even looked at multiple states as well as did cake tastings there and hands down taste this cake was the best! They even wrote us a custom menu to pair well with the rest of our menu and we were blown away. Everything was beautiful and delicious and fresh.
I found Taste This Cake online while in Detroit (where I live), and WOW! I support local businesses and especially start-ups/accelerator type projects, so reviews led me to choose this one for the shower (held in Baltimore). Jamilla responded quickly to my voice/text message, and was able to accommodate my "last minute" order. She was kind and wonderful and designed the cake to match the baby shower theme of "You are my Sunshine, my only sunshine.....". Daughter is also a beekeeper, so she wound that in too. So cute! The cake was fabulous, inside and out. Would love to know her secret for how she made yellow cake taste this good. Her business name of "Taste This Cake" is 100% spot on. I loved dealing with her, the end product was FAB. Highly recommend! Thanks Jamilla!!!
